stormy sky Tornadoes can form quickly and without warning, so do not assume you will always see them coming.

What Does "Storm" Mean for Mercer and Lawrence County?

In the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, when most people hear the word "storm," their minds likely go straight to hurricanes and intense tropical storms.

Here in Western Pennsylvania, however, hurricanes are not exactly a primary concern to residents and property owners, as they do not usually have direct effects in this area. So what kind of natural disasters do we need to worry about?

One type of storm situation that can be incredibly dangerous and damaging to property is a tornado. Ask yourself, "How prepared am I for a tornado?" SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties would like to help.

Fast facts about tornadoes

Do you know the difference between a warning and a watch?

  • tornado watch indicates that current conditions indicate that a tornado is possible, and people in the vicinity should be on the lookout and prepare to take shelter at a moment's notice if a tornado does form
  • tornado warning means that a tornado has been spotted, and people should quickly take shelter

Faster facts!

  • Tornadoes are able to travel in any direction
  • They can form suddenly and without warning
  • They are not always clearly visible
  • The best place to take shelter indoors is in a basement or other windowless room on a ground floor
  • A major safety hazard during a tornado is flying/falling debris
