Frozen Pipe Burst Repair in Greenville

12/27/2023 (Permalink)

burst copper pipe with crack in it When water inside a pipe freezes, it expands and creates pressure within the pipe. This pressure can be strong enough to cause the pipe to burst.

The most common cause of a frozen pipe burst is the expansion of water when it freezes. When water inside a pipe freezes, it expands and creates pressure within the pipe. This pressure can be strong enough to cause the pipe to burst, resulting in water leakage and potential damage to your property.

To repair a burst frozen pipe, follow these steps:

  • Shut off the water supply: Locate the main water valve and turn it clockwise to shut off the water supply.
  • Locate the burst pipe: Inspect your plumbing system to find the location of the burst pipe. Look for signs of water leakage or a bulging pipe.
  • Drain the pipe: Turn on all faucets connected to the affected pipe to release any remaining water and relieve pressure.
  • Thaw the pipe: Use a hairdryer, heating pad, or hot towels to thaw the frozen section of the pipe slowly. Start from the nearest faucet and work your way towards the blockage.
  • Repair the burst pipe: Once the pipe is thawed, use a pipe repair clamp, epoxy, or a rubber patch to seal the leak. If the damage is extensive, you may need to replace the entire section of the pipe.
  • Restore the water supply: Once the repaired section is secure, turn on the main water valve slowly and check for any leaks.
  • Call SERVPRO, your locat water damage restoration company.

It is important to note that if you are unsure or uncomfortable with performing these steps, it is best to contact a professional plumber for assistance. For the restoration of water damage that has occurred to your Ellwood City, New Castle, Sandy Lake, or surrounding areas home or business, call SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties. 5 Best Tips for Fire Prevention at Your Ellwood City Workplace

7/24/2023 (Permalink)

fire safety prevention pamphlet Without having proper planning during a fire, your New Castle or nearby business can quickly turn into a disastrous event.

Having a fire prevention conversation in your Ellwood City workplace is probably not something you have done in a while, or even ever. Although it is an easy talk to put on the back burner, SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties encourages its businessowners to have this important discussion with your employees. Without having proper planning during a fire, your New Castle or nearby business can quickly turn into a disastrous event — one that not only risks the lives of your employees but also the future of your business.

  • Kitchen Prevention. Make sure employees unplug all appliances in the kitchen if you have one. Kitchen fires are the #1 spot fires begin. Make sure that small appliances, like toasters are pulled away from anything flammable. And lastly, ensure the kitchen is equipped with a fire extinguisher and make certain employees are aware how to use it.
  • Office Prevention. Make sure office equipment like computers, copiers, fax machines, and power cords are all up to date with no rips or tears in the wiring. Should your Sharon office use space heaters, make sure employees are plugging them directly into a wall and not using a power strip.
  • Implement a Fire Plan. A fire gives no pre-warning. Therefore, having an escape plan is so important for time sensitivity and safety. Those extra minutes saved by having an organized strategy, mean a lot, and can save someone’s life.
  • Smoke Alarms Save Lives. Ensure smoke alarms are up to date and functioning properly. Change the batteries twice a year and test them regularly to ensure they are operational.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice. Assign roles to specific employees to carry out an effective evacuation: who will call the fire department, who will stay behind to direct employees to exits, and make sure everyone gets out safely, who will coordinate at evacuation point, etc.

Even the most prepared businesses can be affected by fire. SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties is right in your backyard and ready to respond to fire damage at your business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. For immediate assistance, call (724) 704-8939 or visit our Website to learn more.

Review Your Commercial Policy for Winter in West Middlesex

12/14/2022 (Permalink)

fans drying out room Reminder for business owners to look at their commercial insurance policies before the inevitable cold that is about to come.

“Winter is Coming.” As common as this saying is from the popular TV series Game of Thrones…Ned Stark had one thing right. It is coming, and there is no stopping it. SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties is here to remind our New Castle, Ellwood City, Bessemer and surrounding areas business owners to look at their commercial insurance policies before the inevitable cold that is about to come.

  • Have you looked at your commercial insurance policy lately? Just knowing when your insurance expires, how much your deductibles are, and what your policy number is---are all very important pieces of information to have prior to having any disaster. You may not have access to these documents after a loss. Therefore, it’s very important to know this information and have it stored somewhere else besides the office.
  • Make sure you have Business Interruption Coverage. Just so you know---there is usually a waiting period with this coverage where you must pay out of pocket before the coverage ‘kicks in.’ Make sure you know how long, have the funds to cover the waiting period, AND KNOW THE EXCLUSIONS. Talk with you agent to determine what losses are actually covered by this coverage and notate them.
  • Inventory your expensive business personal property. It’s 2022! Take pictures with that smart phone of yours and make a detailed spreadsheet on what your equipment is, how much is it worth, and when you bought it. Go over the larger, more substantial pieces of property or equipment with your agent and ask if they need scheduled on the policy, or if they are picked up by your business personal property coverage. If they are off-premise, such as stored at your home, make sure your agent knows this too, so he/she can notate the property address properly on the policy, or add an endorsement allowing you to be covered away from the building. Most property is only covered when at the location address, unless endorsed differently.
  • Make sure to add Sewer and Drain Back-up to your policy. Most property policies contain a broad water exclusion that precludes damage caused by water that backs up or overflows from a sewer, drain, or sump pump. First reason is…this is super affordable to do so! Secondly, the business would not be covered against a water loss caused from sewer, drain or sump pump back-up without it.

All these things are great to look at for the cold weather. Especially when it comes to freezing pipes, heavy snow on the roof or space heaters being on at your New Castle office. Any of these things can result in disaster and, as a business owner, you must try and be as prepared as possible. And when you are not--- SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties has you covered. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and we specialize in water and fire disasters. We are the restoration company you want to have on speed dial when things go wrong. Should you need us for any disaster this Winter call us anytime at (724) 704-8939.

How to Prepare and Recover from a Commercial Fire in Hermitage, PA

11/7/2022 (Permalink)

notepad that says "preparation is the key" and SERVPRO logo Is your business prepared for a potential disaster? Contact us today about scheduling an ERP!

Just like in our Mercer and Lawrence County homes, fires can be devastating to businesses in the community. SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties does not want to see this. That is why we are here with a guide on how to prepare for and ultimately recover from a commercial fire!

Preparation

Before a fire even occurs, you should be monitoring possible fire hazards. If your company works with flammable materials, you should be extra cautious. However, just like in homes, the majority of office fires come from the kitchen, as reported by the NFPA. Be sure to also check your heating and cooling systems as well as electrical outlets. Monitoring these hazards can help to prevent fires in Hermitage, Sharpsville, and West Middlesex businesses.

It is also important to have a Fire Escape Plan ready for your employees. These consist of planning escape routes, knowing where to meet outside, knowing how to contact everyone and emergency services, and more. Make sure to practice your plan frequently!

Recovery

Some disasters cannot be stopped. However, you can have a plan in place for when they do happen. You can do this with a FREE service SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties offers called an ERP, or Emergency READY Profile. What is an ERP? Here is what it consists of:

  • No cost assessment of your facility
  • A concise Profile Document that consists of critical information needed during an emergency
  • A guide to help you get back into your facility following a disaster
  • Establishes SERVPRO of Mercer & Lawrence as your disaster mitigation and restoration provider
  • Identifies the line of command to authorize work to be done
  • Provides facility specifications such as shut-off valve locations, priority areas, and more!

The ERP will allow SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties to get you and your business back on its feet in no time. Call us today at (724) 704-8939 or visit our Website to get an ERP scheduled or to begin getting your company back to business fast! Being prepared is key!

Tips to Prevent Water Damage in Your Hermitage Business

11/5/2021 (Permalink)

Autumn leaves on a roof and collecting in the gutter Fallen leaves and other debris in gutters and downspouts can lead to water damage to exterior and interior walls of a building

When the temperatures drop, it’s a great time to revisit the ways you can prevent water damage in your Hermitage, Sharon, or Grove City business.  Water damage in your commercial building may not only prevent you from doing business but can also put the health and safety of your employees at risk. The moment you spot signs of commercial water damage, it’s important to act immediately. Here are some tips to reduce the risk of water damage to your home or business:

Prevent pipes from freezing

When temperatures drop, especially at night, exposed pipes are vulnerable to freezing. Water inside a poorly insulated pipe can freeze, which creates pressure and ultimately causes the pipe to burst. This can lead to flooding and structural damage. The best way to prevent frozen pipes is to make sure they are insulated. Pipe insulation can be found at most hardware stores, and the more insulation you use, the better protected your pipes will be.

Another way to prevent pipes from freezing is to keep an eye on your business’ thermostat. The thermostat should never be set lower than 50 degrees – even on weekends or when the building is vacant. Also, regularly replace batteries in thermostats to ensure they are working properly.

Inspect gutters and drainage

Fallen leaves and other debris in gutters and downspouts can lead to water damage to exterior and interior walls of a building. Regularly inspect your building’s gutters, downspouts, and drainage system and remove any debris. Additionally, have gutters professionally cleaned on a regular basis.

Keep your roof clear

It’s important to regularly remove snow and ice from your business’ roof to prevent damage. Snow and ice on your business’ roof can weaken roofing materials and create “ice dams,” which prevent snow and ice from draining properly. Also, be aware of your roof’s weight limits, and periodically check to ensure that snow and ice accumulation aren’t exceeding those limits.

Locate your shut off valve

If a pipe breaks, you will need to act quickly to mitigate damage. It is crucial to know the location of the main shut-off valve for your building’s water supply so you can temporarily cut the flow of water to the building when necessary. This will prevent flooding until you are able to fix the problem.

Seal cracks and gaps

To prevent cold air from getting in and warm air from getting out, ensure any cracks, holes, or other gaps in your building’s foundation and exterior are sealed. Use caulk, weather stripping, and other sealants to make your building more energy efficient and reduce the risk of freezing pipes.

Keep track of valuable items

It’s beneficial to know the value of items in your building, which will help you replace them in the event of a water loss. If there is a risk of flooding, move valuable items from the floor, as long as you don’t put yourself at risk.

Protect your business with insurance

In the event of water or freezing damage, the details of your insurance coverage matter. Many commercial property insurance policies cover the cost of pipe breakage but not damage from flooding, groundwater, and backed-up sewer lines. For adequate protection, you can ask your insurer to add a rider to your policy to extend coverage to hazards that are normally excluded.

Get an Emergency Ready Profile

SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties offers a FREE service to improve your business’ preparedness in the event of a disaster. An Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) is a plan and guide to the ins and outs of your facility which contains critical information needed in the event of an emergency, including the location of shut off valves, current vendors and their contacts, and much more. If a fire or flood were to occur to your facility – you, your staff, and emergency personnel save time by acting instead of panicking.  This helps you as a business owner by minimizing interruption and associated loss of revenue. All at NO COST to you!

Some restoration companies advertise “mold removal” and may even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy because removing all mold from a house or business is impossible; microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. Here are the facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Getting your ductwork cleaned out at your home or business helps remove harmful containments, debris and dust from building up in your HVAC system. Other positives include a longer lifespan of the HVAC equipment, cleaner air quality, (especially for family or workers with allergies), reduces mold growth within the ductwork, and greatly reduces energy costs.

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

image of SERVPRO worker in full PPE wiping a commercial refrigerator down during a Covid-19 cleaning Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned is a defensive cleaning program that goes beyond janitorial or carpet cleaning, it is a higher standard of clean

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our world as we know it. We are all doing our normal routine a little differently than we used to.  If you are a business owner---customers are expecting a whole new level of clean. Whether you are a restaurant owner, salon owner or a custodian at a school---clean needs to be at an all-time high and SERVPRO of Mercer County, with help from the CDC guidelines is here to give you some tips on keeping your commercial space as clean and safe as possible from COVID. Here’s what you can do.

Clean: Always wear gloves when you are cleaning and disinfecting, clean surfaces first with soap and water and then use a disinfectant, practice routine cleaning of surfaces that are touched regularly, objects that are touched by many hands should be cleaned and disinfected before each use. Such as: shopping carts and sale keypads.

Disinfect: Disinfect with a proper cleaner. The CDC recommends these products to help the spread of germs caused by the SARS-COV-2  virus. The CDC also recommends that you should read and follow the directions on the label to ensure safe and effective use.

  • Wear skin protection and consider eye protection for potential splash hazards
  • Ensure adequate ventilation
  • Use no more than the amount recommended on the label
  • Use water at room temperature for dilution (unless stated otherwise on the label)
  • Avoid mixing chemical products
  • Label diluted cleaning solutions
  • Store and use chemicals out of the reach of children and pets

You should never eat, drink, breathe or inject these products into your body or apply directly to your skin as they can cause serious harm. Do not wipe or bathe pets with these products or any other products that are not approved for animal use.

Soft Surfaces: Make sure you are vacuuming regularly. Floors, rugs, and drapes can be cleaned using soap and water, or with appropriate cleaners. Lauder items, as necessary. Use the warmest water setting as possible and thoroughly dry items.

Electronics: Put a wipeable protector on the screens, so they may be wiped. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when wiping an electronic. If there are no included guidelines, wipe with a spray that contains at least 70% alcohol.

Laundry: Wash items per instructions on the label with warmest water possible and ensure they are dried completely, wear gloves dealing with items from people who are sick, dirty laundry from a sick person can be combined with other people’s items. Clean hampers and clothes baskets accordingly. Wash your hands immediately after glove removal.

Cleaning or Disinfecting Your Building if Someone is Sick: Close off areas used by the person who was affected, you may not need to close your doors---just the areas that were involved. Open all windows and doors to create circulation, wait 24 hours before you clean or disinfect---if you cannot wait this long, wait as long as possible. Clean all the areas used by the person, including bathrooms, copiers, keyboards, sales pads…etc. Vacuum the space WHEN UNOCCUPIED, with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter. Turn off HVAC units to avoid contamination of the unit, turn off in-room fans to ensure particles will not escape from the facility. Once disinfected---the area can be re-opened and other workers can return to work.

Commercial Restoration: Apartment Living in New Castle, PA

4/18/2018 (Permalink)

What do we mean when we say"Commercial"?

When you hear the word "commercial", what immediately comes to mind? Probably lots of big companies and major businesses, perhaps with large office facilities, warehouses and fulfillment spaces, or even stores with product displays. It's likely that you're picturing a workplace of some sort, where the purpose of the property is to offer a place for business to be conducted.

This is one way to think of commercial restoration jobs, as SERVPRO does handle many properties of this nature. Fire and water damage, or even cleaning needs, are important to be dealt with so that companies can be back in business as soon as possible.

What many people do not realize, however, is that a large number of restoration jobs take place in commercial living facilities like apartment complexes. These facilities can suffer the same types of damage and inconveniences as businesses, but the difference is that residents of these facilities are not dealing with damage to their workplace, but to the place that they call "home".

Thankfully, SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties is here to help.

Our SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties team is fairly accustomed to restoring damage in apartments and commercial living facilities.

Our goal is to restore the damaged property as quickly as possible, so that property managers can get back to business as usual, and residents can have their homes and comfort returned to them.

Our team has dealt with everything from water damage in a few apartments, to cleaning and restoring the content for several different families after a fire occurred in the facility. We will be on site as quickly as possible to address emergency situations, or simply to take care of cleaning needs before and after renting an apartment to a new tenant.

For more details about our services for apartments and living facilities, see our commercial services page.

Commercial Dirty Ducts = Dirty Air

9/28/2017 (Permalink)

When was the last time you had your ducts cleaned?

If the answer to this question is not any time within the last three years, you could be having some issues that you may not even know are duct-related.

The biggest cause of poor indoor air quality is a dirty or neglected ventilation system. Contaminants like dust, odors, or even mold can become trapped in your air ducts and circulate through your home or business. Whatever is circulating through your HVAC system is also present in the air you are breathing.

Do you have allergies, asthma, or sinus problems?

If the answer to this question is yes, then it is especially important for you to have your duct work checked and cleaned every few years. Contaminants in the air like dust and pollen can aggravate allergies or respiratory conditions, making symptoms more severe.

Do you feel you are paying too much for your heating and air conditioning?

If the answer is yes, you may want a cleaning to keep your system working at full capacity. The HVAC system will work longer and more efficiently if it is cleaned and maintained, which will save you money down the road.

Let us help!

SERVPRO professionals will gladly inspect the ventilation system in your home or business and tell you if it is in need of cleaning.

If it does need to be cleaned, we will use advanced technology and patented equipment to make sure you have clean air to breathe.
