Melting snow on grass. Melting snow and ice can cause damage to your home or business if not taken care of appropriately.

Oftentimes during winter, we cannot wait for Spring to come. We look forward to the snow and ice melting away and for sunnier days ahead. However, there is one precaution that should be taken before Spring comes. Melting snow and ice can cause damage to your home or business if not taken care of appropriately. The most likely area to flood from melting snow and ice is your basement and crawl spaces: how can this be avoided?

Avoid Flooding from Melting Snow and Ice

Here is what you can do according to StaySafe.org to prevent your basement from flooding in your West Middlesex, Pulaski, or New Wilmington home:

  • Seal up cracks: Water enters the home by coming through the cracks in the walls and foundations of your home. By simply carrying out an inspection of your external walls, you will be able to identify if you have any cracks. If the cracks are small, then it is an easy job to seal them up.
  • Invest in a sump pump: A sump pump is the best way to remove water in an emergency. It is recommended that you invest in a sump pump and test it regularly to make sure it works.
  • Clear away snow: One of the main reasons that basements flood in the spring is due to snow build-up around the home.

How to Handle Sewage Backup in Homes in Sharon, PA

8/12/2021 (Permalink)

A sewer manhole cover. We are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to safely restore your home or business.

We have all likely had some moisture in our basements here in Mercer County. That can be somewhat common. But when this moisture is from a sewage backup, that is out of the norm. Not only is this uncommon, but it can also be extremely harmful to your home.

Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment are necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.

There are three major types of contaminated water. SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties will inspect that contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response to safely restore your home or business. Here are those three types on contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or category 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Sewage backup should be considered an emergency and dealt with as quickly as possible. We are the water damage restoration specialists with specific training and expertise to safely restore your home or business.

Water Damage Mishaps During the Holiday Season

12/11/2020 (Permalink)

image of person using a plunger to unclog a clogged toilet Plumbing issues and clogs can happen easily with more flushes and toilet paper going down the “throne.”

When the holidays come around, so does family. And when there are many people in your home---mistakes can happen. SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties is here to give you some tips on how to ensure your houseguests remain on the “nice list.”

Give an ‘Appliance’ Tutorial

Everyone’s house works a little differently. Be sure to explain to your houseguests how to work your toilets, sinks, dishwashers, ice makers and washing machine. Even the smallest mishap can turn into a flood very quickly. Prevention by having prior conversations is key, so ‘Aunt Mary’ understands any limitations and quirks your appliances may have.

Toilet Trouble

When there are many people in your home; you will have a lot more…well. Plumbing issues and clogs can happen easily with more flushes and toilet paper going down the “throne.” These terribly messy and unsanitary issues can cause a large mess. Make sure to take care of backups right away, so SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties does not have to pay you a visit on Christmas night.

Use Caution with What Goes Down the Drain

Garbage disposals have given the typical homeowner the idea that anything can go down the drain. When in reality…this could not be further from the truth. Many food items can clog drains, even with disposals. Some of the items that hit the “NO” list are: clam or oyster shells, coffee grounds, grease or oil from cooking, large amount of vegetable or fruit peels, rice and artichokes.

Minor Flooding

If little ones come to visit, you could possibly have some bathtub spillage, or other minor flooding. Kids tend to splash the water outside of the tub, and this could lead to water damage under floorboards. And unattended water can only turn into one thing…mold. These types of small spills need addressed right away. Mold can begin growing in as little as 48 hours.

SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties wishes you a safe and happy Holiday season with your family. We understand accidents can still happen even during the Holidays. Our restoration experts are available every single day for your emergency water needs whether it is in Mercer or Lawrence County or a surrounding area. Winter Water Damage Tips for Mercer and Lawrence Counties

12/4/2020 (Permalink)

image of person wrapping insulation around copper pipes Protecting your pipes with insulation, especially the accessible ones in the attic or crawl spaces is a must.

Since most homeowner’s insurance policies do not cover flooding, many homeowners are left with a mess after a water loss. This scenario can be especially prevalent in the winter when there are more hazards with water. SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties is an expert water loss restoration company, and we are here to give you some valuable tips this coming season to help you prevent water damage at your home.

“Doesn’t my homeowner’s insurance pay for water loss?”

Great question. However, the answer is technically no. Firstly, your homeowner’s insurance needs to have an endorsement to have “some” coverage for water loss. If your policy has the endorsement, it can cover water damage, such as from leaks and burst pipes, or water that comes into your home through your roof and windows. These can be pricy losses too. The average water loss ranges anywhere from $5,000-$20,000. To be covered for ‘flood’---you would need to carry a separate policy altogether known as a flood policy. Check with your agent for more information.

Water supply lines should be checked annually. The main water lines to your home, as well as the washing machine lines need tended to each year. Kiplinger.com says, “Check for leaks from your hot water heater, washing machine, ice machine in your refrigerator, and any other appliances that can leak. Most water supply lines tend to last for about five years; you may want to replace rubber hoses with steel-braided hoses, which tend to last longer.”

Make sure the gutters are clean and the roof is intact. Ice dams and other major water damage are created by unattended gutters. These can leak down the side of your home and in places you do not want water. Clean the gutters free of the leaves and other debris that accumulated all fall. Also, check the roof for missing shingles that can allow water to pass through into your attic and into your home.

Insulate pipes to prevent freezing. Protecting your pipes with insulation, especially the accessible ones in the attic or crawl spaces is a must. A neat tip is to leave closet doors open in the winter to heat the pipes just a tad to prevent freezing.

Termites Love Water Damaged Wood

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

a swarm of termites infesting wood Termites are the silent destroyers and one of homeowners’ biggest enemies.

Most people dream about the day they finally get the keys to their own home. They finally can remodel, knock down the wall to make a bigger kitchen, buy new carpet, and update the bathroom.

Although all the remodeling and adding finishing touches can be fun and exciting, the best thing you can do for your home is preserve the value and structure of your home. The biggest threat to the structure and value of your house is moisture. Moisture can cause a host of problems such as mold, mildew, rotting and decaying wood and damage to painted surfaces. Moisture can pose health risks, structural damage, and even scarier – termites.

Termites love moisture! They need to be constantly surrounded by it. They live several feet under the ground in the damp, cool dirt. They build tunnels and make their way into your home to have a feast of water-damaged wood.

Termites are the silent destroyers and one of homeowners’ biggest enemies. Even if your home has been newly purchased and declared termite free by the home inspector, you are still at-risk. Termites often go undetected because they do their damage from the inside out and are usually not found until there is extensive damage.

To help protect yourself against moisture problems and termites, it is important to periodically check the caulking around your shower or tub, and around your toilet where it connects to the floor. It does not always require a major flood to create moisture, it can be as simple as a slow leak over time under your toilet.

Keep your home dry and free of excess moisture, decaying wood, and termites! If you do find water in your home, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties! We are water restoration experts and can have your home looking “Like it never even happened.”

Who’s Responsible for Water Damage? Tenants or Landlords?

9/14/2020 (Permalink)

image of landlord handing over keys to a home to tenants In general, a landlord is responsible for maintaining the property, so it is habitable and functioning up to code.

Unfortunately, water damage is a common problem for homeowners and renters alike. When water damage occurs, it is important to know who is responsible for the damage cost. The tenant or the landlord?

Water damage can be very unpredictable. In general, a landlord is responsible for maintaining the property, so it is habitable and functioning up to code. In some cases, the landlord may refuse to address issues in a timely manner or at all. This can lead to bigger problems such as mold.

Review Your Lease

It is important to know the details of your lease especially regarding property damage. For example, if the water damage is severe and the home or apartment is inhabitable, is the tenant still expected to pay rent?

Landlord Responsibilities

Basic plumbing and upkeep such as sinks, toilets, and tubs is usually the responsibility of the landlord. If the landlord, refuses to repair these functions, they may be liable for negligence.

Water damage to the building itself such as the floors, walls, or utilities should be covered under the landlord’s insurance.

Tenant Responsibilities

Personal property damage may fall under the responsibility of the tenant. For example, if the tenant leaves a faucet on and falls asleep, they will probably be responsible for the damage.

Water damage requires a fast response to minimize damage. SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties is ready to help. We are water restoration experts and will have your home looking “Like it never even happened.”

What are the Different Water Categories?

12/9/2019 (Permalink)

water background with three categories of water represented by sink, washing machine, and toilet If water threatens your Mercer County property, call us today - we are here to help!

As a local restoration company, we get questions about the specifics of our process everyday. Specifically, when it comes to water. Property owners are curious about the different kinds of water and what they mean?

Below, you will find the information we use everyday to make your Mercer County water disasters, "Like it never even happened."

What does “category” mean?

The category of the water loss refers to the level of contamination in the water, considering its originating source.

What does “class” mean?

Class of water refers to the amount of water and the likely or anticipated rate of evaporation based upon the number and type of wet materials in the affected space.

Category 1:

A Category 1 water loss is when the water originates from a sanitary water source and does not pose a substantial risk if ingested or inhaled.

Class 1 water losses may only affect part of a room or area, or they may include larger areas with materials that have absorbed minimal moisture.

Some examples of a Category 1 water loss:

  • Broken water supply lines
  • Sink or tub overflows with no contaminants
  • Melting ice or snow and falling rainwater
  • Broken toilet tanks and toilet bowls that do not contain contaminants or additives

Category 2:

A Category 2 water loss is when water contains contamination and has the potential to cause sickness if contacted or consumed by humans. Category 2 water can contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as, organic and inorganic matter.

A Class 2 water loss affects at least an entire room of carpet and cushion. Water has gone up the walls less than 24 inches. There is moisture remaining in structural materials like plywood, particle board, structural wood, VCT, and concrete.

Examples of Category 2 water loss:

  • Overflows from washing machines
  • Discharge from dishwashers or washing machines
  • Overflows from toilet bowls
  • Broken aquariums and punctured water beds

Category 3:

A Category 3 water loss contains pathogenic, toxigenic, or other harmful agents such as silt, pesticides, organic matter, heavy metals, regulated materials or toxic organic substances.

A Class 3 Water may have come from overhead. In a class 3 the ceilings, walls, carpet, insulation, and sub floor are saturated in the entire area.

Examples of a Category 3 water loss:

  • Sewage
  • Toilet backflows that originate from beyond the toilet trap
  • All forms of flooding from seawater
  • Ground surface water and rising water from rivers or streams and other contaminated water entering or affecting the indoor environment, such as tropical storms, wind-driven hurricanes, or other weather-related events

Class 4:

Class 4 water losses include wet materials with very low permanence porosity such as hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, lightweight concrete, and stone. In these cases, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity.

Impact of Rain Damage on Your Sharon, PA Home

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

rain drop background with text overlay stating "Water damage in your property" The first step to water damage recovery is having a solid preparation plan in place.

Can your Pennsylvania home stand the rain? As water mitigation specialists, we know that heavy rainfall can be a tricky culprit when it comes to keeping your property ready for whatever happens. But are you aware of exactly HOW you can deter heavy rainfall from damaging your Mercer County home?

Property Tips for Heavy Rain

  1. Inspect your Roof - any cracks or breaks in your roof can leave your home vulnerable to water damage to the floors, ceilings, and walls. Additionally, if a moisture problem goes unaddressed mold is likely to grow. TIP: have your roof inspected regularly, fixing issues as they arise can help prevent a large cost down the line.
  2. Clean the gutters - any built up debris or leaves in your gutters may leave an opening for water damage concerns to your home. When your gutters are backed up the water that is normally stored inside of them, has nowhere to go. TIP: clean your gutters at least twice a year
  3. Check with your insurance - a comprehensive insurance policy that includes flooding insurance will come in handy in the event that your property is damaged as a result of a water issue

The first step to water damage recovery is having a solid preparation plan in place. Follow these useful tips to help get your home ready for whatever rainfall that may happen this season and if you incur any water damage on your property give us a call anytime at 724-704-8939.

We are always here to help!

Do you have water in your basement?

10/1/2018 (Permalink)

wet concrete floor If you are continually seeing water or dampness on the floor or along the walls of your basement, call SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties.

Picture the basement of your home...

Are there ever water puddles on the floor or damp spots at the base of the walls following rainfall?

Do the walls ever feel damp or have condensation?

Is there a damp, musty smell that makes it unpleasant to be in the space?

Does the space feel humid in the summer months?

Even if these issues seem small, you should not ignore these indicators of a moisture problem. If left untreated for a long period of time, these things could lead to serious water damage to your property. Particularly concerning could be the possibility of mold growth and unsafe air in the space, as mold can emerge anywhere that moisture is present.

So what should you do if any of these factors appear to be present in your basement?

First, it is a good idea to invest in a dehumidifier to run in your basement at all times. This would be especially helpful in cases where a musty or damp smell is present, as the dehumidifier will remove much of the moisture from the air before it can significantly affect your property. When SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties professionals begin the drying and water restoration process, they employ powerful dehumidifiers and air movers which remove the moisture and dry the affected area in a short amount of time.

If you are continually seeing water or dampness on the floor or along the walls of your basement, call SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties, who will not only clean up the issue but will help you to determine the source of the moisture and how it is entering your home.

It's Water Season in New Castle, PA

4/18/2018 (Permalink)

shoes in water f you do find yourself with water damage on your property, big or small, call SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties.

April showers, May flowers, leaky roofs, and flooded basements....

'Tis the season for water damage!

While we are supposed to be well into spring weather by now, Mother Nature did not seem to get that memo here in Western PA.

Normally at this time of year, we would mainly be talking about rain showers and the resulting damage to your home that excess water usually brings with it. This year, instead of April showers, it seems as though someone has ordered a variety pack of temperatures and precipitation types that has left us wondering what season we will be experiencing on any given day. Snow and wintry mixes quickly turn into ice and freezing rain, and before we know it, everything has melted and the sun has come out....that is, until the next day, when the snow and wind come back for another round, and we are back where we started.

As bizarre as these fluctuating weather patterns seem in comparison to what we are used to, the bottom line is that this kind of weather will still lead to the same results that we see each spring; water damage.

Each time the temperatures rapidly rise, the snow begins to melt and leaves water looking for a place to settle. The bad news is that, with fluctuating temperatures, the ground rarely has time to soften, nor the water time to dry before the colder temperatures return again.

It is nearly impossible to keep up with the rates of melting, which means that there will likely be water accumulating around the foundation of your home or in other areas that you do not even notice. That is, until you find that it has made its way inside your home and caused damage.

Pay attention to weather patterns and take note of places where water damage could occur.

If you do find yourself with water damage on your property, big or small, call SERVPRO of Mercer and Lawrence Counties and we will do our best to make it "Like it never even happened."
